Helderberg Neighborhood

The Helderberg neighborhood is situated in western Albany, New York, within Albany County. This community is about 2.5 miles from the downtown area, which is about a seven-minute drive by car. This largely residential community is bounded by New Scotland Avenue on the north, Hackett Boulevard on the south, South Manning Boulevard on the west and Academy Road on the east. The zip code for the Helderberg community is 12208.

A variety of amenities can be found in and around Helderberg. Within community bounds on the west is the St. Peters Hospital, one of several medical centers near downtown Albany. The rest of this large community is residential, devoted to well-maintained single-family homes. The southeastern portion of the community is host to a school known as the Albany Academies.

Just outside of community bounds to the east is what has come to be known as the city’s University District. This area hosts The Sage Colleges – Albany Campus, Albany Law School and Albany College of Pharmacy. It is also host to several additional medical centers, including the Albany Medical Center and the Stratton VA Medical Center – Albany.

Just north of the University District, still within walking distance of Helderberg, is Washington Park. This popular city park dates back to 1686 and offers a variety of amenities, including a lake, scenic trails, tennis courts, and a playground. It hosts numerous community and city events, including an annual Columbus Day Parade and Tulip Festival.

A few minutes southwest of Helderberg, on the other side of Interstate 87, are two local golfing options. Capital Hills at Albany is a public course, which is adjacent to the Normanside Country Club. The latter is a private club that dates back to 1927. It offers a scenic 18-hole course as well as a clubhouse with dining options.
