Washington Park Neighborhood

Washington Park is a community in west central Albany, within walking distance of the downtown area and the waterfront. This community extends to Western Avenue and State Street on the north, South Lake Avenue on the west, Madison Avenue on the south, and Willet Street on the east. The ZIP code for this Albany County community is 12203.

The Washington Park community is built around a large city park by the same name. The park itself dates back to 1686, and the community has a rich history and beautiful architecture. Henry Hobson Richardson, a popular 19th-century architect, was just one of the famous architects whose work can be seen in the Washington Park neighborhood.

The park spans the vast majority of the neighborhood, but the far northwestern portion offers several commercial buildings and part of the SUNY Albany-Downtown Campus, which extends past neighborhood boundaries to the north.

Among the many amenities offered at the historic city park are tennis courts, shuffleboard, basketball courts, trails, and a playground. Washington Park Lake and several important monuments are located there. Among the latter are a statue of the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, the Marinus Willet Memorial, the King Memorial Fountain, and The Soldiers and Sailors’ Monument.

Many city and community events take place at Washington Park. Every year the park hosts the Tulip Festival, the Latin Festival, and The Columbus Day Parade, as well as an annual holiday lights festival. The Freihofer’s Run is an annual women’s race that attracts runners from all over the world, as well as locals.

Residents of the Washington Park area are within walking distance of a variety of attractions and amenities. The downtown area, situated to the east, hosts the state capitol, as well as several cultural attractions and opportunities for shopping, dining, and entertainment. The Washington Park neighborhood is immediately north of the city’s University District, which is dominated by several higher-education institutions and medical centers.
