When you find your apartment in Chittenango Falls, you may just think, “There’s no place like home!” That phrase will ring especially true in June, when Oz-Stravaganza takes place. The author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum, was born here on May 15, 1856. To celebrate, the village holds a three-day festival that includes a parade.
But you won’t have to wait for the festival to enjoy the Wizard of Oz theme – several downtown businesses are named for the book, and you can even follow the yellow brick road – you’ll find it along Genesee Street downtown.
Located about 15 miles east of Syracuse, the village of Chittenango Falls is located in the town of Sullivan. In addition to its unique and beautiful downtown – complete with its “yellow brick road,” beautiful historical architecture, and mountainous backdrop, Chittenango Falls is just south of Oneida Lake and just east of Old Erie Canal State Park and Green Lakes State Park.
Chittenango Falls State Park features a 167-foot waterfall that tumbles over 400-million-year-old bedrock. Visitors to the park can hike into the gorge to view the falls, or they can enjoy the view from the overlook. In addition to hiking, park visitors enjoy fishing and picnicking.
