You may be wondering about the name. When the town was named in 1822, the country of Greece was struggling to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire. Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since the mid-15th century until the Greek War of Independence started in 1821. In a show of support for the Greeks, the town chose the name “Greece.” The Greeks won independence in 1829, but wasn’t recognized as an independent nation until 1832.
If you will be moving to an apartment in Greece with kids, the middle and high schools in the Greece Central School District feature classic Greek names, such as Apollo, Olympia, and Athena. The elementary schools are named after the road where they are located. The Greece Central School District is considered one of the largest in the region.
