Those not from New York may not know the county name, but Nassau County, together with Suffolk County to its east, is referred to by locals as “Long Island.” The area incorporates two cities, three towns and 64 incorporated villages.
As of the 2010 census, Nassau’s population was 1,339,532. The county seat is located in the village of Garden City. Forbes magazine’s American Community Survey ranked Nassau County number 11 of the top 25 richest counties in America; the median household income is $93,579.
With that kind of wealth in the area, one might guess that Nassau County offers an abundance of activities, from high-end shopping to horse racing at Belmont Park, one of the oldest tracks in the nation and home to the third leg of the Triple Crown.
Long Beach, once called “the Riviera of the East,” has become a surf town with a famous beach, lots of convertibles and lots of bikinis. Museum Row, located in Garden City, offers the area’s best museums including the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Nassau County Firefighter’s Museum and the Cradle of Aviation Museum.
Old Bethpage Village Restoration, a 209-acre historic site includes 51 buildings such as an inn, a store and a church. Throughout the year, Old Bethpage hosts events including the Long Island Fair, A Haunted Long Island 1880 Halloween, and holiday Candlelight Evenings. Jones Beach State Park is the largest public beach in the world, with six and one-half miles of uninterrupted beachfront and a boardwalk that spans two miles.
