In 1683, the 12 original counties were set up in the Province of New York. One of those was named in honor of King William III, who was Prince of the House of Orange. Today, Orange County is a vibrant location just 40 miles northwest of Manhattan. It is considered part of the New York City metro area, but it has something many other New York City area counties don’t have – elbow room.
Bordered by the Hudson and Delaware Rivers, Orange County is home to three state parks: Goosepond Mountain State Park, Harriman State Park, and Sterling Forest State Park.
Orange County has deep roots in US military history. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington lived in Newburgh – his longest area of residence during the war. While living in Newburgh, Washington founded the Order of the Purple Heart. His headquarters became the country’s first historic site. The most famous of all military academies, the United States Military Academy at West Point, is located in the northeastern section of the county.
