Rochester at a Glance
Charlotte Neighborhood
Starting at Lake Ontario and following the Genesee River south to Winchester Street, Charlotte is a beautiful waterfront neighborhood in Rochester. The north end of the neighborhood is dominated by Ontario Beach Park, which features a long stretch of sandy beach for swimming and sunbathing. The park is a very popular summer destination – and not just because of the beach! The park features 39 acres and includes a pier, the historic 1905 Dentzel Carousel, a playground, ball fields, and picnic shelters. The tens of thousands who flock here in the summer enjoy swimming, boating, beach volleyball, picnicking, and more.
If having a beach in your neighborhood isn’t enough to have you searching for apartments in Charlotte, the Genesee River – and the parks that flank it – just might. The Port of Rochester is located on Lake Ontario where it meets the Genesee River. The port is a terrific destination – you will be able to walk the Charlotte Pier, go hiking or bicycling, swimming, boating, and fishing.
The Port is also the location of the Public Market, which first opened in 1827. This historic farmer’s market was named “America’s Favorite Farmers Market” in 2010. In addition to selling fresh, local produce and other items, the market features the Artist Row at the Market every September and Flower City Days at the Market every spring.
Toward the south end of the neighborhood, you’ll find another riverfront park – Turning Point Park. This park features a waterfall, the Genesee Riverway Trail, and a boardwalk over the river. The park even features a stunning rain garden and an oak forest named “Bullock’s Woods.” The waterfall, Turning Point Falls, is located off a heavily-wooded hiking trail toward the south end of the park.
When you move to your Charlotte apartment, be sure to bring your bicycle! Rochester is very bicycle-friendly, and city leaders are working to make Rochester a world-class bicycling community. The city has miles of bike lanes, bicycle trails, and cycle tracks. It also features amenities such as bike lockers (available for rent at downtown city-run garages), bike racks and corrals, and free-to-use bicycle service stands.
Apartments in Charlotte provide a scenic river and lakefront community filled with amazing things to see and do. And when you aren’t riding your bicycle along the riverfront trail, hiking to a waterfall, or playing in the sand or swimming at the beach, downtown Rochester is only about five miles south. A short distance from your new apartment and you could be at the Seneca Park Zoo, catching a show at the Little Theatre, enjoying the Memorial Art Gallery or Strong Museum, or attending classes at the University of Rochester.
