Mt Pleasant Neighborhood

Mount Pleasant is a neighborhood in Schenectady, New York. The area is located south of Schenectady. The eastern border is Interstate 890 and the neighborhood of Hamilton Hill. The western border runs along the CSX railroad tracks. The northern border runs along Broadway. To the north is the General Electric plant. The town of Bellevue is to the west. Norwood Avenue and Crane Street mark the southern edge. Christier Avenue and Crane Street are the main thoroughfares.

Students attend Mt. Pleasant High School, Mt. Pleasant Middle School, and Hamilton Elementary School, all part of the Schenectady City School District. A magnet school also serves the students from kindergarten to grade five and is called the Academy of Culture and Communication. Steinmetz Career Center provides education for grades nine to twelve. The Schenectady County Public Library operates a Mont Pleasant branch in the neighborhood. Recreation abounds at Stelmack Park with Mont Pleasant Athletic Field and Michigan Avenue Park.

Mount Pleasant has quite an interesting history. It became part of Schenectady in 1903, when it was annexed from Rotterdam, the town next door. Immigrants from Poland and Italy lived in its two-family homes. The neighborhood also included Jewish settlers who built two synagogues and a Jewish Community Center. General Electric was a main employer in the neighborhood, and when the company moved, the residents moved to the suburbs. Mont Pleasant covers 521 acres and is densely populated. More than half of the homes were built before 1939.
