Southside Neighborhood

The Syracuse neighborhood of Southside presents a diverse setting for urban living. Home to three of the city’s largest parks, Southside features four residential sections within the larger neighborhood. Each smaller area has its own character but Onondaga Park, Kirk Park, and Elmwood Park are considered popular recreational sites where all the communities meld.

The Southwest neighborhood’s status in the Southside has benefitted from civic attention. Non-profit agencies and government programs continue to reclaim and restore historically significant sites. Some of the city’s most affluent citizens once lived in the architectural splendor of ornate Queen Anne homes or lavish Greek Revival mansions on West Onondaga Street.

Wilson Park, Roesler Park, and Jubilee Park are set in the Southwest community. The efforts of progressive community groups helped create unique activities at Kwanzaa Park. Local residents can plant a vegetable garden or create a design on an innovative art wall.

Another smaller neighborhood, Strathmore, features unique architectural designs with many single-family structures built in the 1950s. It also boasts grand stucco and brick turn-of-the-century homes. The area’s Robineau Residence and Studio are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stunning Hiawatha Lake attracts visitors to Onondaga Park set in Strathmore. The park’s historic bathhouse and picnic pavilion represent the Southside’s historic nature. The Southside American Little League plays in local Wadsworth Park. It is connected to Winkworth, home of the famous, elite Bellevue Country Club.

The smallest inner-neighborhood of Southside is Elmwood, home to a fishing pond and the remarkable stonework of Elmwood Park. The historical nature of the park emanates the New Deal workers’ efforts to blend nature with stone to create paths and stairs in the park.

The last of the smaller neighborhoods, Brighton, provides recreational activities at Kirk Park. Home to the Youth Enrichment Outreach Project, Kirk Park also is home to the Pop Warner Kirk Park Colts. Brighton also boasts many revamped historic homes.

The Southside neighborhood is located next to the major arterial of Interstate 81 allowing quick access for commuters. Public transportation is also available.
