Kenilworth Neighborhood

Kenilworth is an older, upscale neighborhood located near downtown Asheville and Biltmore Village. It is bordered on the west side by Biltmore Avenue, on the south by Swannanoa River Road, on the east by Tunnel Road and on the north by the top of the mountain that overlooks the city. The area is included in the 28803 and 28805 zip codes.

Jake Chiles developed Kenilworth based a novel he read by Sir Walter Scott. Kenilworth was a magnificent castle in England where the story took place. He purchased the old Patton Farm in Asheville, North Carolina and worked to make it as much like the grounds of Kenilworth as he possibly could. Later, Jake’s wife became the first woman mayor of the state of North Carolina.

The Kenilworth Inn Apartments is just one of the many historic buildings in this neighborhood. It was originally built as an eight story luxury hotel and was later used as a military hospital during World War I and World War II. It has now been transformed into a beautiful complex of modern apartments.

Kenilworth is a community that has kept its rural touch, in spite of the fact that it is only a 20-minute walk to downtown Asheville. Its tree-lined streets and large lake add to the homey, country atmosphere that permeates throughout the entire neighborhood. There are a variety of home styles and sizes.

Residents of Kenilworth are fortunate to have both of the Mission Hospital campuses on the north western border of their neighborhood. They are also close to the Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.
