Asheville, North Carolina located in Buncombe County in the western portion of state, is nestled near the Blue Ridge Mountains about 125 miles west of Charlotte. Livingston Heights is west of McDowell Street (U.S. 25) and is less than one mile from Mission Hospital-Memorial Campus. The hospital, located on Biltmore Avenue, employs almost 6,000 people, including specialists in the fields of cancer care, neuroscience, and genetics.
There are more than fifty parks in the city of Asheville. Less than one mile from Livingston Heights is the Walton Street Park, located on Oakland Road. The park is near local schools amid a residential area. It has a baseball field, a children’s playground, and one of the city’s public pools.
Less than a mile from Livingston Heights is the oldest house in Asheville, the Smith-McDowell House. The land the mansion occupies was purchased through a land grant for Revolutionary soldiers. The brick mansion was built by James McConnell Smith, son of Colonel Daniel Smith. Daniel Smith was one of the first European settlers of the area. The Smith-McDowell House is open to the public and is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.
Asheville’s downtown is about two miles from Livingston Heights. The city’s Urban Trail, a downtown walking tour showcases Asheville’s public art collection. The public art collection includes more than 30 pieces that can be seen along the two-hour walking tour.
