Historic Montford Neighborhood

Historic Montford is a neighborhood in Asheville, North Carolina. As its name implies, it is historic, with most of its 600 plus homes having been constructed between 1890 and 1920. It is located within the zip code 28801. The neighborhood was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. A charming aspect of this neighborhood is the fact that many historic homes on Montford Avenue have been converted into bed and breakfasts.

The architecture of this neighborhood is exceptional. There are homes in a wide variety of styles including Arts and Crafts, Queen Anne, Victorian, and Neoclassical. One of the finest homes in the neighborhood is now owned by Duke University. It is the former James H. Rumbough home built in 1892. Among his many accomplishments, James is credited with being the first man to drive a car over the Appalachian Mountains in 1911. Montford is also remembered as the place where Zelda Fitzgerald died in a hospital fire in 1948.

The boundaries of Historic Montford are the I-240, US routes 19/23 and Broadway. Riverside Cemetery is well worth visiting. It is a historic cemetery dating to 1885. Among the famous who have found their final resting place here are authors Tom Wolfe and William Sidney Porter (O Henry).

Walking along the tree lined streets is a favorite pastime of residents and there are wide sidewalks to accommodate this activity.

The Montford Complex offers both indoor and outdoor activities for residents. Indoors there is a climbing wall and a gym. Outdoors there is a playground, ball field, tennis court, and the Hazel B. Robinson Amphitheater where the Montford Park Players perform.
