Washington Heights Neighborhood

Washington Heights was developed in 1913. It was the first community designed especially for middle-income African-Americans. A historic neighborhood with Craftsman-style bungalows, Washington Heights is pedestrian-friendly and has a strong local business community. It is located north of Brookshire Freeway and west of Beatties Ford Road, three miles northwest of downtown Charlotte, North Carolina.

Johnson C. Smith University is located one mile south of Washington Heights. This acclaimed, historically African-American liberal arts university was formed shortly after the Civil War.
