Outer Downtown Durham Neighborhood

Outer Downtown Durham is located around Duke University, especially its East Campus. It is close to Hillandale Golf Course, Duke University Hospital, the Carolina Theatre, and the Durham Performing Arts Center. Outer Downtown Durham contains Old North Durham and Old West Durham.

Old North Durham is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Originally known as simply North Durham, this farmland was developed into one of the area's first suburbs in the late 1800s. The construction of the trolley line during the early 1900s was a boost to the industrial and economic development of the area. Now a modern suburb with a historical feel, Old North Durham provides residents with amenities like picnic benches, playground, and a large soccer field.

Old North Durham claims two city parks: the Old North Durham Park and the smaller “pocket” park called Bay-Hargrove Park. Other nearby parks catering to Old North Durham residents include the Duke Park, Northgate Park, and Rocky Creek Park. As a pet-friendly residential area, it also features two dog parks where pets can run off-leash. The Northgate Park is only one mile away from the neighborhood center, and it provides separate fences for larger and smaller dogs. The other dog park, located within the Pine Wood Park south of Durham, is also ideal for family pets.

With its proximity to Downtown Durham, residents can take advantage of the area's thriving arts and entertainment industry. They have easy access to the historic Carolina Theatre, the Northgate Stadium 10, and Southpoint Cinemas. The Durham Performing Arts Center within the American Tobacco District in Downtown Durham also regularly features world-class performances.

Known by the name of Pin Hook in its early days, Old West Durham is also among the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Today, a large part of this neighborhood is designated as a National Registry Historic District. The Erwin Cotton Mills played an integral part in the history of Old West Durham, arriving in 1893. Homes were then built for the mill workers, transforming Old West Durham into a mill village.

After nearly a century, Erwin Mills closed shop in 1986. Though much of the cotton mill’s facilities have been torn down in the name of progress, one of the main buildings still stands and has been renovated into apartments and offices. Revival efforts have brought new business in since then, with new buildings replacing a number of the old ones. Even so, many of the homes in this neighborhood are still the original mill homes and the air is still one of neighborly visits and friendly fare.

The activity of the university makes Broad Street and Main a popular business area, though a variety of businesses also pepper the rest of this vicinity. Grocery stores, a resident book store, restaurants, furniture stores, a pleasant mix of housing and still more make this neighborhood a treasured one.
