Outer South Durham Neighborhood

Outer South Durham is divided in half by I-40. This area extends from Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard southward and includes the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, making Outer South Durham a terrific area for college students and university employees. Neighborhoods to consider in Outer South Durham include Hope Valley Farms, Copper Mill, Five Oaks, Chatfield Bluffs, Brandon Ridge, and Valleybrook.

The American Tobacco Trail goes from downtown Durham to North Carolina Highway 54, and it consists of 12 miles of trails, continuing from Massey Chapel Road to the Durham/Chatham County line. It is an ideal trail for biking, hiking, running or walking.

Dog owners can bring their dogs to the Durham Dog Park at Piney Woods Park. There are four areas: one for puppies and small dogs, one for large dogs, one for obedience training, and another space for special events. Dogs must be registered to come into the dog park where they are allowed to be leash-free. In addition to the dog park within Piney Woods Park, there is an athletic park, water fountains, a youth baseball field, playgrounds, picnic facilities, grills, shelters, and soccer fields.

Campus Hill Park has a large recreation center, water fountains, an athletic field, an adult softball field, playgrounds, grills, lights, and picnic facilities. Other great destinations in Outer South Durham include Northgate Mall, which includes a movie theater complex. The area is convenient to Downtown Durham’s nightlife, art museums, and restaurants, and it is convenient to the Raleigh/Durham International Airport.

The Durham area is rich in American history. The Bennett Place State Historic Site, located at 4409 Bennett Memorial Road in Durham, is where the largest troop surrender in the Civil War took place. In addition to a museum, the attraction hosts Civil War re-enactments in an authentic setting that includes Civil War soldiers in uniform on horseback.
