The Standard Neighborhood

The Standard is an L-shaped neighborhood that is located in downtown Gastonia in the 28052 zip code. It is bordered by South South Street on the west, and it sits between West Main Street to the north and Andrew Jackson Highway on the south.

In the area around The Standard, there are county and city government buildings, the post office, the police department, the sheriff’s department, the Gastonia transit building, the Salvation Army, and two churches. Most of the housing in this area are apartments above the area stores.

Oakwood Cemetery is a short distance to the west on Andrew Jackson Highway. It is known as a political cemetery because of the three politicians who are buried there. Alfred L. Bullwinkle is the only one who actually lived in Gastonia. The others were from Gaston County. Bullwinkle was an Army major during World War I, then became a U.S. Representative for nearly 29 years. He died in office in 1950 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

Lineburger Park is to the southeast of The Standard community, just seven blocks from downtown Gastonia. It was upgraded 2009 and makes a great place for the entire family. There are paved walking trails, a miniature train, playground, picnic area, basketball court, lighted tennis courts, and a lighted ball field. The large outdoor swimming pool provides families with a place to cool off in the sweltering summer heat. There is also a skate park where the youth enjoy practicing and showing off their skateboard stunts.
