Additionally, railroad tracks run through the East Market Street A neighborhood and public bus transportation is available. Summit Shopping Center is located on Summit Avenue and convenient to residents.
The East market Street A neighborhood is characterized by modest, older homes. Some houses in the area date from 1905, but most are 50 or 60 years old. There is also some commercial property in the area. Additionally, the neighborhood is in close proximity to the University of North Carolina-Greensboro and Greensboro College so there are many rentals in the area that serve as off-campus housing for the colleges.
The city of Greensboro is working to redevelop and refurbish the East Market Street area. Due to its historical value and close proximity to downtown, the area has promise for people who want to live, work and recreate without a commute.
Several parks are in the area. Barber Park offers many amenities to the neighborhood. The highlight of the 109-acre park is the 18-hole disc golf course that was built for the North Carolina State Games. The park also features picnic shelters, a baseball stadium, a one-mile multi-use trail, and indoor basketball and tennis at the Simkins Indoor Sports Pavilion.
Gillespie Park is a nine-hole city golf course that features two sets of tees so that golfers are able to play 18 holes. The highlight of Gillespie is the mature oak trees that form a beautiful canopy throughout many parts of the course.
