Kirkwood Neighborhood

With a well-known 4th of July celebration and its own non-profit organization, Kirkwood, near downtown Greensboro, is one of the most tightly-knit neighborhoods in the city. Kirkwood is home to about 250 families, many with young children. Friends of Kirkwood, which is organized by Kirkwood residents, sponsors an annual 5K run and walk, neighborhood parties and parades and oversees a neighborhood directory and newsletter.

Kirkwood was developed on the former Kirkpatrick family farm, sold in 1928 to developers. The Great Depression stopped construction, and major building in the neighborhood resumed in the 1940s. Many of the homes are cottage-style and reminiscent of the post-WWII era.

The neighborhood is lined with mature trees, and people often take walks along Kirkwood’s peaceful streets. Kirkwood residents value their neighborhood’s peaceful atmosphere, exemplified in the neighborhood’s recent successful battle to keep a drug store chain from opening a store on an outside corner of the neighborhood.

Kirkwood is in ZIP code 27408, and it is bordered by Liberty Drive on the south, Colonial Avenue on the east, Dellwood Drive on the west and Efland Drive on the north.

Residents of Kirkwood enjoy a 4-acre neighborhood park, which has a playground, basketball courts, a stream and a sandbox. The neighborhood is close to downtown Greensboro and is a short drive to some of the city’s best urban parks, such the Bog Garden, which features a wood boardwalk through picturesque marshes.

The neighborhood is also near several Greensboro amenities, including Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and the Friendly Center, an outdoor mall that is one of the city’s top shopping destinations.
