Mars Hill, NC Apartments for Rent

Mars Hill is nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina, just 18 miles north of Asheville. This small town is surrounded by national parks – the Great Smoky Mountains National Park nearly surrounds Mars Hill, while the Cherokee National Forest is to the northeast and Pisgah National Forest is directly east of Mars Hill.

Rent an apartment in Mars Hill and you’ll have easy access to stunning waterfalls, river gorges, sheer rock walls, soaring mountain peaks, and dense forests. Visitors to the area enjoy seasonal activities such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, climbing, camping, horseback riding, and fishing.

Mars Hill is coveted for its amazing views, but this isn’t a typical quiet mountain community. Mars Hill College, a private Baptist liberal arts college, brings vitality to the community. The college was established in 1856, making it the oldest college in western North Carolina. The college was burned in 1865 during the Civil War by union troops and it took the colleges nearly 40 years to rebuild.

The unique history of this charming town not only includes its role during the Civil War, when it was a strategic location that played host to hundreds of Confederate soldiers, but also of an event that occurred in 1935 – the Bank of Mars Hill robbery. Six armed men held up the bank, only to be discovered by two girls. The girls alerted the switchboard operator, who sent out an alarm. As the robbers fled the scene, they shot up the town, leaving hundreds of bullet holes in buildings along Main Street.

When you rent a Mars Hill apartment, you get it all – a college town with great views; amazing outdoor activities; a nearby major city filled with shops, restaurants, museums, and historic sites; and a great community with a fascinating history.
