Fargo at a Glance
In the middle of the sprawling city of Fargo, the established Roosevelt neighborhood offers a mix of housing options occupied by more renters than home owners. With North Dakota State University (NDSU) on the west side of the neighborhood, many educators, students and university employees live in the area.
People who have lived in the neighborhood all of their lives also call Roosevelt home. Turn of the century homes fenced on large shaded lots, modest single family starter homes, or multi-family apartment buildings are common in this neighborhood.
The Roosevelt Neighborhood Association recently adopted a program called Walk Clear. Known for its high walkability rate, community leaders decided to make sure snow gets scooped off area sidewalks so that residents can walk year round through the neighborhood. For area residents who prefer riding, the public transit system, MATBUS (Metro Area Transit Bus) runs throughout the neighborhood.
A facility for grade 3-5, Roosevelt Elementary School sits in the center of the neighborhood. The school playground and local Roosevelt Park are popular places for neighborhood recreation. In addition to playground equipment, Roosevelt Park offers ice skating and hockey.
The NDSU campus provides some interesting buildings. A unique historical building, Old Main, was the first building on the campus. Built in 1891, Old Main remains part of the university system.
Other university buildings hint at a more colorful history. Both Minard Hall and Ceres Hall on the NDSU campus are said to be haunted. Supposedly, a girl hanged herself on the third floor of Ceres Hall where strange events often occur. Investigators claim some form of evil exists in the basement. An attic area in Minard Hall held dances until two young people were said to have died there. Since then, the attic hasn’t been used. Many locals believe the stories that have been featured on national television.
