Shoppers rejoice: The West Acres neighborhood, which shares its name with the West Acres Shopping Mall, is right next to this bi-level shopping magnet just west of Interstate 29. Development of the community began in the mid-1970s. The neighborhood is home to two condo complexes and over 40 apartment buildings, including some high-rises. The MAT transit system has plentiful service throughout the neighborhood, and includes a transfer station at the mall. This makes it easy to get almost anywhere in Fargo.
Nearby schools include the Tharaldson Learning Center on 35th Street South, Sister Rosalind Gref School on Fiechtner Drive South, and Rasmussen College on 19th Avenue Southwest. The Church of Jesus Christ of the LDS, on 17th Avenue South, is about a mile east of West Acres. Fargo Baptist Church, on 23rd Avenue South, is a half block east on the other side of Interstate 94.
Interstate 94 also leads to Prairiewood Golf Course, near Fargo Baptist Church. Farther east is Fargo Country Club Golf Course and the fishing spots along the Red River. Rabanus Park, in the center of West Acres, offers volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts, shaded picnic areas, and playgrounds. A bike path circles its perimeter and follows along several streets within the neighborhood, including 42nd Street South, which leads to the mall.
The two floors of West Acres Shopping Mall are home to national brands JC Penney, Sears, and Herberger’s. It has a food court, restaurants with table service, and a 14-screen movie theater.
