Troy University is a public university located in Troy, Alabama, with other state schools in Montgomery, Phenix City and Dothan. The school was founded with a mission to educate and train new teachers. Its main campus enrollment is 7,194 students. The total enrollment of all Troy University campuses is 29,689.
In the 1950s Troy University began offering extension courses to nearby military bases; first at Fort Rucker, near Dothan, and later at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. A separate Troy State College teaching center was established at Fort Rucker in 1961, which evolved into the university’s present-day Dothan Campus. A similar center at Maxwell Air Force Base became the present-day Montgomery Campus. These programs were the forerunners of today’s Global Campus division of Troy University, which operates more than 60 sites in 17 US states and 11 nations. In 1982, the Troy State University System was formed, as the campuses in Dothan and Montgomery were granted independent accreditation status. Formerly Troy State University, the university became Troy University in 2004 when the Board of Trustees voted to drop “State” from the name to better reflect the institution’s worldwide mission.
The main campus of the school offers several degrees, from English to business to nursing; unique programs include geomatics and interpreting for the deaf. Degrees range from associate through doctoral level degrees, beginning its first doctoral program, the Doctorate in Nursing Practice, in 2009.
