United States Air Force Academy - Colorado Springs, CO
The United States Air Force Academy is situated just north of Colorado Springs. It is relatively new among the US service academies – it was established in 1954. The USAFA is a four-year program, with most graduates entering the United States Air Force as second lieutenants. USAFA is highly selective, and candidates must be nominated by a member of Congress to be accepted. Tuition is paid by the US government with a commitment to serve in the military after graduation.
The suburban campus consists of 18,500 acres and is a popular tourist attraction. It is bordered by Pike National Forest, home of the world-famous Pikes Peak. Athletics is a major part of the USAFA curriculum, and all cadets are expected to participate. Physical education is a requirement all four years, with options including swimming, boxing, wrestling, and team sports such as soccer and basketball. The Air Force Falcons compete in a wide variety of collegiate sports, with 17 men’s and 10 women’s teams that compete in NCAA Division I. The football team plays at Falcon Stadium and is part of the Mountain West Conference.
To find an apartment near the United States Air Force Academy, the communities of Northgate and Gleneagle are great choices. Woodmoor, Briargate, and Northeast Colorado Springs are also nearby, while downtown Colorado is only about 10 miles south.
