The University of Athens (UGA) is located in Athens, Georgia about 60 miles from Atlanta. The university was founded in 1785 and was the first chartered state-supported university in the country. UGA contains 388 buildings across 615 acres and has one of the best research libraries in the nation.

As a historic city, Athens has several landmarks, including the Athens Welcome Center, located in the Church-Waddel-Brumby House, which dates to 1820. Several buildings on the UGA campus are included in the walking tours as historic sites. The beautiful downtown is also a historic district, and 14 other neighborhoods are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
