Wheaton College - Wheaton, IL

Abolitionist and pastor Jonathan Blanchard founded Wheaton College in 1860 and named it for Warren L. Wheaton, a benefactor of the college. This private Evangelical Protestant school is located in Wheaton, Illinois – a small city located about 25 miles west of Chicago and six miles north of Naperville.

The school’s fascinating history began when Blanchard served as its first president in 1860 and utilized the college as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Wheaton was also the only college in the state to offer a women’s program at the time. The first African-American to graduate college in Illinois did so at Wheaton in 1866. And in the 1920s, the country’s youngest college president served at Wheaton – 31-year-old J. Oliver Buswell.

Today, Wheaton College is a top-ranking Christian liberal-arts university. The college offers around 40 majors, including English, Biblical Studies, Political Science, Psychology, and Communications. Wheaton’s Conservatory of Music offers two music degrees and includes several ensembles.

Blanchard Hall is a campus landmark, built in 1853 as the original college building. It is a vast limestone structure that resembles a castle. The Marion E. Wade Center is a large library and museum with items such as J.R.R Tolkien’s writing desk, C.S. Lewis’ wardrobe and desk, and several special collections. The Billy Graham Center, named for one of the college’s more famous graduates, houses a museum of evangelical history, the Wheaton College Graduate School, and the college radio station.

To find an apartment near Wheaton College, look in downtown Wheaton. This charming area features period lighting and historical buildings that contain restaurants, cafes, and shops. It is pedestrian-friendly and within walking distance of the college. Other nearby areas include Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Winfield, Warrenville, and Flowerfield.
