Butler University - Indianapolis, IN
The first co-educational university in Indiana, Butler University, was established in 1855. Today, the private, high-ranking university offers degree programs in six colleges – the College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Communication, Jordan College of the Arts, and the College of Pharmacy and Health Services. It is located in Indianapolis on a 295-acre campus.
The Butler Bulldogs have 19 varsity sports teams that compete in Division I of the NCAA’s Big East Conference, including basketball, baseball, and soccer. The football team participates in the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) Pioneer League. The Bulldogs have several championships in several sports. The men’s cross country program has won 13 Horizon League Championships in a row, while the women’s team has won nine.
The main sports stadiums are the football team’s Butler Bowl and the basketball team’s Hinkle Fieldhouse, a national historic landmark that was built in 1928. Hinkle Fieldhouse has played host to some of basketball’s Indiana greats, including Larry Bird. It is also the host of the legendary “Milan Miracle,” when Milan High School, with an enrollment of 161, beat Muncie Central High School, enrollment 1,600. This state final game was the inspiration for the classic 1986 movie, Hoosiers.
If you want to live in an apartment near Butler University, look in north Indianapolis. The university is located along the White River just north of West 44th Street. Northern Indianapolis communities to consider include North Crows Nest, Spring Mill Heights, Meridian-Kessler, and Crown Hill.
