Founded in 1854, the University of Evansville is a small, private university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. This unique university has a satellite campus in Grantham, England, and nearly half of UE’s students study abroad as part of their educational experience. The main campus is situated on 100 acres in the charming city of Evansville, Indiana.
UE is best known for its outstanding theater department, which is considered one of the best programs in the country. Many alumni go on to work in television and film. Some notable Evansville alumni include actors Jack McBrayer, Ron Glass, and David Emge; actresses Carrie Preston, Kelli Giddish, and Crista Flanagan; and writer and producers Matt Williams and David McFadzean.
The UE Purple Aces participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Missouri Valley Conference. UE has 14 varsity teams that participate in basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, golf, and several other sports. The unusual nickname was given to UE during the 1920s after the basketball team beat the University of Louisville. After the game, the Louisville head coach joked that the Evansville coach didn’t have four aces up his sleeve – he had five.
