Eastern Kentucky University - Richmond, KY
Although it was established in 1906, Eastern Kentucky University’s history started long before, in 1874. Central University occupied the campus from 1874-1901. After financial difficulties, the university closed its doors. A few years later, in 1906, the campus once again saw students when it became the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School No. 1. The school was renamed to Eastern Kentucky University in 1930.
The University Building is the oldest building on campus, built for the original Central University in the late 1800s. EKU’s five colleges include Education, Justice and Safety, Business and Technology, Arts and Sciences, and Health Sciences.
EKU school colors are maroon and white. The Eastern Kentucky Colonels compete in NCAA’s Division I as part of the Ohio Valley Conference. The impressive football team gives students and area residents alike something to cheer about – they’ve won 20 conference titles and two Division I-AA National Championships (1979 and 1982). The football team plays at Roy Kidd Stadium.
Richmond is a mid-sized city and ideal setting for the university. Students looking for off-campus apartments to rent in Richmond will enjoy a dynamic city in the heart of the Bluegrass Region. Richmond was founded in 1798 and contains beautiful Victorian architecture, a quaint downtown, and several city parks.
