The University of Maine - Orono, ME

The Morrill Act of 1862, signed by President Lincoln, is responsible for some of the best public universities in the United States – including the University of Maine. As Maine’s flagship university, UMaine has grown into the largest university in the state and one of the top research universities in the country.

UMaine is located on an island along the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers in Orono – a gorgeous little town about 10 miles northeast of Bangor. The campus was completed in 1868 and is situated on 660 acres. In addition to academic and administrative buildings, the campus is home to five museums, stores, a café, ten sports facilities, a pub, and a recreation center. The campus was designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York’s Central Park and the grounds of the White House.

The Maine Black Bears participate in NCAA Division I for several sports, including football and ice hockey. The men’s ice hockey team has won two national championships. Student-led sports clubs are also popular and include alpine skiing, lacrosse, Nordic skiing, rugby, and softball.

When choosing an apartment in the University of Maine area, consider renting in Orono or nearby Bangor – both are gorgeous and ideal for outdoor sports such as whitewater rafting, skiing, fishing, hiking, and camping. Bangor is a larger city with several locations on the National Register of Historic Places, while Orono is a small, charming riverfront community that was first settled in 1774.
