Smith College - Northampton, MA

Smith College was part of a historical group of private, women-only liberal arts colleges developed between 1837 and 1889 that were referred to as the Seven Sisters. In addition to Smith, the other colleges include Mount Holyoke, Bryn Mawr, and Barnard. Radcliffe and Vassar used to be part of the seven, but Radcliffe became part of Harvard University and Vassar became coeducational.

A high-ranking, selective institution, Smith College has some notable graduates, including Julia Child, Nancy Reagan, Sylvia Plath, Yolanda King, Margaret Mitchell, and Gloria Steinem. The campus contains several historic buildings, including Sessions House. The house was built in 1751 by the Hunt family, and it is rumored that the eldest daughter, Lucy Hunt, haunts the house.

Settled in 1654, Northampton is a gorgeous and historic city located about 15 miles north of Springfield. In addition to historical architecture, Northampton is home to a wide variety of restaurants, a thriving music and arts scene, farmers markets, and attractions such as the Academy of Music. It is also home to the Paradise City Arts Festival, one of the country’s best art fairs.
