Eastern Michigan University - Ypsilanti, MI

Eastern Michigan University is a comprehensive, co-educational public university located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, 35 miles west of Detroit and eight miles east of Ann Arbor. Founded in 1849, Eastern Michigan University, also known as EMU, is comprised of five colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health and Human Services, and Technology. The university also offers an honors college and a graduate school.

Students are attracted to EMU’s atmosphere and location. The university community enjoys a small-town environment amid a major metropolitan area. The EMU campus sprawls across 800 acres, with 122 buildings. Eighteen miles of walkways and jogging trails wind through scenic and wooded areas. Eagle Crest, the school’s conference center, golf course and resort, is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake. Detroit Metro Airport is a fifteen-minute drive from campus.

The school has an enrollment of 23,000 students. It offers undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral and certificate degrees in 200 programs of study in the arts, sciences and professions.

In 2011, EMU became the first university in Michigan and the eighth in the country to offer a program specifically designed to house single parents and their children on campus. The program, called “Keys to Degrees,” houses single-parent families near each other in one of the school’s on-campus apartment complexes, and will offer these students extra academic and personal support.

Notable alumni include John Harvey Kellogg, one of the creators of corn flakes and co-founder of the Kellogg Company.
