The University of Mississippi - Oxford, MS

If William Faulkner were writing the story of the University of Mississippi, known affectionately as Ole Miss, he might title it, “Home of the First and Only.”

The school opened its doors in Oxford, Mississippi in 1848 to 80 students, and for 23 years it was Mississippi’s only public institution of higher learning. For 110 years, it was the state’s only comprehensive university. Ole Miss was the first—and remains the only—public institution of higher education in Mississippi chosen to shelter a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Mississippi’s flagship university was one of the first in the nation to offer engineering education. It was one of the first in the South to admit women. The school established the state’s first College of Liberal Arts, School of Law, School of Engineering, School of Education, accredited School of Business Administration, Graduate School and School of Nursing. It has the only School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry and School of Health Related Professions in Mississippi.

Since 1848, Ole Miss has grown to a doctoral degree-granting university with 15 academic divisions and 18,000 students. In addition to its main Oxford campus, the school’s Medical Center in Jackson trains professionals in its schools of medicine, nursing, health-related professions, dentistry and graduate studies, and the school offers regional campuses in Southaven, Tupelo, Grenada and Booneville.

The university, alma mater of William Faulkner, is a center for Faulkner studies, and offers one of the finest collections of the Nobel Prize-winner’s work. The school maintains his Rowan Oak home as a literary shrine.
