Dartmouth College - Hanover, NH
The legendary lawyer and orator Daniel Webster was a graduate of historic Dartmouth College. In 1819, he had the unique opportunity to defend his own alma mater in a case so emotionally charged, and with a speech so moving, that it was said to bring tears to many eyes, including his own.
The landmark case dealt with New Hampshire’s attempt to force Dartmouth to become a public institution, taking away power and control from the college and giving it to the governor.
In the charter granted Dartmouth in 1769, King George III of England spelled out the purpose of the school, set up the structure to govern it, and gave land to the college. The Court eventually ruled that this charter qualified as a contract between private parties, and was valid; our Constitution says a state cannot pass laws to impair a contract. This ruling is said to be one of our country’s most important, resulting in the rise of the American business corporation.
Today’s Dartmouth alumni seem to share Webster’s passion for his institution. Located on the Connecticut River and surrounded by the White Mountains, the Dartmouth campus offers the most beautiful natural scenery in the Ivy League.
The school enrolls approximately 5,800 students. In addition to 19 graduate programs in the arts and sciences, Dartmouth is home to the nation’s fourth-oldest medical school, the Dartmouth Medical School, founded in 1797; the nation’s first professional school of engineering, the Thayer School of Engineering, founded in 1867; and the first graduate school of management in the world, the Tuck School of Business, established in 1900.
