The 55-acre campus of Stevens Institute of Technology is situated along the Hudson River in Hoboken, New Jersey. The campus includes Castle Point and Stevens Gate, the remnants of Stevens Castle, which was built in 1853 and was replaced in 1959 by the Wesley J. Howe Center. Castle Point is considered a Hoboken landmark, mentioned in Henry Hudson’s ship navigator’s logbook as their ship the Half Moon traveled the river in 1609.
Stevens Institute of Technology was founded in 1870 and is a private research university. The land it occupies was purchased in 1784 by John Stevens. One of his sons, Edwin, left the land and funds in his will for a university in 1868. Today, Stevens features four schools with 29 undergraduate majors, 43 master’s degree programs, and 22 Ph.D. programs. The Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science is located in the historic Edwin A. Stevens building, the original 1870 building.
Other unique features of the Stevens campus include underground tunnels, once used to carry supplies for the Stevens family. The passages, now caved in, are bricked off for safety reasons. Sybil’s Cave, also bricked up, was once a major tourist attraction because of its large room and natural spring water. The cave was the inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe’s short story, “The Mystery of Marie Rogeet.” Elysian Fields, just north of the campus, is thought to be the location of the first baseball game in 1845. And of course, with a history dating back to Colonial times, Castle Point is supposedly home to a ghost.

Look along Hudson Street, Bloomfield Street, Garden Street, Park Avenue, and Clinton Street and between 5th Street and 11th Street to be near the school.
