The nation’s oldest technological university is Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. RPI was founded in 1824 and features five schools: Science; Architecture; Engineering; Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; and the Lally School of Management & Technology. RPI is a private research university located along the Hudson River in Troy. The historic and picturesque city of Troy is located about seven miles north of Albany. Settled in 1787, the city features amazing architecture that includes Victorian and Belle Epoque styles. Due to the beauty of the historic district, Troy has been used as the setting for several movies, including The Bostonians, Scent of a Woman, Ironweed, the Time Machine, and the Emperor’s Club.
One of Troy’s historic landmarks is the RPI campus. The 275-acre campus is located on a hill overlooking the city and the Hudson River. The Winslow Chemical Laboratory is one of the oldest buildings on campus, built in 1866. The West Hall, built in 1868, is an impressive building, also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Old Troy Hospital.
