Probably the best little college you haven’t heard of, Davidson College is a highly-selective, top-ranking liberal arts college located in Davidson, North Carolina. This private college has an average enrollment of about 1,700 students, is considered one of the most rigorous schools in the country, and has graduated 23 Rhodes Scholars. Davidson college offers majors in 20 fields, and 80 percent of students either study or work internationally while attending Davidson.
Davidson was established in 1837 by the Presbyterian Church, and while students must adhere to a strict Honor Code, the College Board of Trustees voted in 2005 to allow 20 percent of the board to be non-Christian. Women were not allowed to earn degrees from Davidson College until 1972. Famous graduates of Davidson College include John Belk (1920-2007), former head of Belk, Inc. department stores and four-term mayor of Charlotte (1969-1977). Authors Patricia Cornwell, Martin Clark, and John Hart and Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Charles Wright also graduated from Davidson.
The 665-acre campus is located in the lakeside town of Davidson, roughly 20 miles north of Charlotte. Lake Norman, the largest manmade freshwater lake in North Carolina, is home to Lake Norman State Park and is popular for fishing, boating, and jet-skiing.
