Duke University - Durham, NC
Duke University is a private research university located in Durham, North Carolina. Home of the Blue Devils, Duke enrolls approximately 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university’s growth and academic focus have contributed to its ongoing reputation as an academic and research powerhouse.
The school regularly sends teams from its North Carolina campus to the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, earning the title of the best collegiate undergraduate math team in the United States and Canada three times. From 1996 to 2007, Duke’s team finished in the top five 10 times, with only Harvard achieving a better record.
Duke University was founded by Methodists and Quakers in the town of Trinity in 1838. In 1924, tobacco industrialist James B. Duke established The Duke Endowment, at which time the school changed its name to honor James’ deceased father, Washington Duke. As a result of the endowment, Trinity underwent physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. The gothic-style West Campus is dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. Duke maintains a historic affiliation with the United Methodist Church.
US News and World Report ranked the university’s undergraduate program 10th among national universities, and its medical, law, public affairs, nursing, and business graduate programs among the top 12 in the nation.
The Blue Devils, Duke’s 26 varsity sports teams, are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division I Atlantic Coast Conference. They have won 12 NCAA team national championships.
