East Carolina University - Greenville, NC
East Carolina University is a public, coeducational research university located in Greenville, North Carolina. The school is the largest institution of higher learning in the region and, according to US News and World Report, the second-largest university in the state. It has held the title of the fastest-growing campus in the University of North Carolina system for six consecutive years.
Founded in 1907 as a teacher training school, ECU continues its mission of training teachers by preparing more teaching professionals than any other university. The university’s College of Education received the “Teacher Quality Partnership Grant” from the US Department of Education, providing up to $9.4 million over the next five years to improve teacher preparation.
However, today the school also serves students through the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, the Small Business Institute and the College of Business, as well as highly-regarded research projects.
ECU is known all over the world for its pioneering work in robotic surgery; its surgeons performed the first minimally invasive robotic-assisted mitral valve heart surgery in the US, and today train surgeons from around the world in their techniques. The school is also recognized for having one of the country’s most successful in vitro fertilization programs, ranked first in North Carolina and fourth in the nation.
The university’s campus has grown from 43 acres in 1907 to almost 1,600 acres today, with academic facilities located on four properties: Main, Health Sciences, West Research facility, and the Field Station for Coastal Studies in New Holland, North Carolina. The nine undergraduate colleges, graduate school, and four professional schools are all located on these four properties, with the non-health sciences majors located on the main campus. The College of Nursing, College of Allied Health Sciences, The Brody School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine are located on the health science campus.
Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock is an ECU alumnus.
