In the 1800s, the Northwest Territory was a rough-and-tumble area populated by frontiersmen. Those who settled the frontier were determined to encourage growth; to that end, they began to establish colleges. One of the first was Denison University, founded in 1831 as Granville Literary and Theological Institution, then Granville College, and finally in the 1850s it became Denison University.

Denison is a private, liberal arts institution located on a picturesque 850-acre campus situated on a hill. A 36-mile bike trail connects the town of Granville to the nearby cities of Newark, Alexandria, and Johnstown. The Denison Big Red participate in NCAA Division III as part of the North Coast Athletic Conference. Sports teams include football, basketball, and baseball.
