When it opened in 1886, it did so quietly. A veil of secrecy kept the new college low-key, with just 76 students in the first class. The new Catholic school began as St. Ignatius College, and the first classes were held in a small, wooden building. The college grew quickly, and soon a new building was built. In 1923, St. Ignatius College was renamed in honor of the first American Bishop, John Carroll. John Carroll University has grown into a prestigious private Catholic university, considered one of the top-ranking universities in the US.
The sixty-acre campus consists of 20 buildings. The JCU Blue Streaks participate in NCAA Division III as part of the Ohio Athletic Conference. The football team plays at Don Shula Stadium – a stadium named in honor of the famous JCU graduate. Other famous alumni include journalist Tim Russert, former Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy, author Brian P. Cleary, astronaut Carl E. Walz, and Bishop Anthony Pilla.
University Heights is the closest neighborhood for an apartment in the John Carroll University area. Shaker Heights is just south of JCU, while Cleveland Heights is to the west. Other nearby communities include South Euclid, Beachwood, Highland Hills, Mt. Pleasant, and Buckeye-Shaker. For those who prefer an apartment in an urban setting, downtown Cleveland is just 9 miles west.
