Ohio University - Athens, OH

Ohio University, abbreviated as OU, is a public university located in Athens, Ohio. Located on a sprawling 1,850-acre campus with an enrollment of 35,000 students, OU is ranked as a “Tier 1” university by US News and World Report.

OU was founded in 1804, making it is the oldest university in the Northwest Territory. In 1828 John Newton Templeton, a free black man, became one of the first black Americans to earn a college degree. His years at Ohio University are chronicled in the stage play, “Free Man of Color” by Charles Smith.

The university is well known in regional folklore as the most haunted college campus in the United States. According to the British Society for Psychical Research, the university and its surrounding area are among the most haunted places in the world. Two notable examples of local haunting are a statue of an angel in the West State Street cemetery which is said to be crying, and the spirit of a civil war veteran named Michael Ward who chants names of university students. Fox Television taped an episode of its Scariest Places on Earth program at OU.

OU was named by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “Doctoral/High Research Activity” institution. Recent research grants include $942,000 in federal funding for projects aimed at developing diagnostic tools for disease, including identifying aggressive cancer cells; and $500,000 to Ohio University’s Innovation Center and Edison Biotechnology Institute for projects that will stimulate economic development in southeastern Ohio.

Notable alumni include actor, philanthropist, auto race driver Paul Newman; Eugenia Price, historical author; and Nancy Cartwright, voice of the Bart Simpson character on The Simpsons.
