With a history dating to 1773, Dickinson College has developed a reputation for innovation. Originally established as a grammar school, Dickinson was chartered shortly after the Treaty of Paris was signed, making it the oldest college founded in the newly-recognized United States. Overall, it is the country’s 16th oldest college.

Dickinson College is a private, liberal arts college. It is home to roughly 2,300 undergraduates and offers 42 majors. The college emphasizes international studies with over 40 study-abroad programs in 24 countries. More than half of the students enrolled at Dickinson study abroad.

A sustainable college, Dickinson was recently recognized by Sierra Magazine as one of the most eco-enlightened colleges in the country, and it made the Princeton Review’s 2010 Green Honor Roll.

The Dickinson Red Devils participate in a variety of sports, including football, soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. The Red Devils are part of NCAA Division III Centennial Conference.

With a campus steeped in history, Dickinson College’s buildings are impressive. Old West, the original building, was built by Benjamin Latrobe in 1803, shortly after the original structure burned. Latrobe, who also worked on the US Capitol and many other historic buildings, is considered the father of American architecture. Old West is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark.
