Clemson University - Clemson, SC

Established in 1889, Clemson University is situated on a rural campus in northwestern South Carolina. Its impressive 17,000 acres contains many beautiful features, including Carillon Garden, Bowman Field, and Cox Plaza. Fort Hill, a National Historic Landmark, is located in the center of the campus. Built in 1803, this was the home of John C. Calhoun, a 19th century statesman.

The Clemson Tigers play in NCAA Division I. They play at Memorial Stadium, often referred to as “Death Valley.” The name derives from the fact that the stadium is located in a valley, and the university’s cemetery (yes, cemetery) overlooks the stadium. Woodland Cemetery (nicknamed Cemetery Hill), was the idea of a former university president. Walter Merritt Riggs, who became president in 1911, loved the university so much he didn’t want to leave – ever. He helped create the cemetery for faculty, and when he died in 1924, he was the first person buried in the cemetery.

The Fighting Tigers football games are a huge draw for students and area residents alike. The team was formed in 1896 and has won many championships. They hold 18 conference titles, and more than 160 NFL football players began at Clemson.

The South Carolina Botanical Garden, a 295-acre public garden, is located near the southern end of the university campus. It contains streams, nature trails, display gardens, statues, a butterfly garden, and more.
