College of Charleston - Charleston, SC

Brick-lined paths that were once full-service streets are shaded by towering oaks draped in moss. Charming buildings blend seamlessly into the timeless landscape, surrounded by lush lawns and beautiful gardens. When you first see the College of Charleston, you may think you’ve stumbled across an elegant, vintage community – and you’d be right. The College of Charleston was founded in 1770 and is one of the oldest schools in the nation. It is one of the Colonial Colleges – colleges established before the American Revolution.

The College of Charleston is a public, sea-grant, space-grant university located in downtown Charleston. The university is a National Historic Landmark. It contains many 19th-century structures, including the Main Building, the Library, and the Gate Lodge. These buildings are situated around the Cistern, an oval structure that was first built to hold water. This group of buildings is considered the heart of the campus.

Apartments in the College of Charleston area provide access not only to the university, but to the historic city of Charleston, as well. Enjoy the shops and restaurants along Market Street, visit historic sites such as the Powder Magazine, the oldest building in the Carolinas dating to 1712, and Dock Street Theater, which first opened in 1736. Shop at Old City Market, built in 1841 and visit historic plantation homes, such as Middleton Place House Museum, which was built in 1705.
