Sam Houston State University - Huntsville, TX

Sam Houston was a Texas hero credited with bringing Texas into the United States. After serving as Governor of Tennessee from 1827 to 1829, he eventually made his way to a Mexican state and became involved with the Texas Revolution. Today, Sam Houston is remembered through the Texas city that was named for him, a US army base, a historical park, a statue, a national forest, and a university – Sam Houston State University.

SHSU is bordered by Sam Houston National Forest in the small college town of Huntsville, about 70 miles north of Houston. Huntsville is a great location, featuring several great attractions, including Sam Houston’s gravesite, his Woodland Home, and the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. The city is also home to a downtown walking tour, an art tour, and a music festival.

Established in 1879, SHSU is classified by the Carnegie Commission as a Doctoral Research University. Two of its most highly-respected programs are its criminal justice and dance programs, both of which are among the best in the country. The university offers 5 doctoral programs, 54 master’s degree programs, and 79 undergraduate programs.

The school colors are orange, white, and blue. The SHSU Bearkats participate in NCAA Division I, and the football program competes in the Championship Subdivision. They have one of the oldest rivalries in the division with Stephen F. Austin State University – dating back to 1923.
