In an episode known as the May Revolt, the students of James Madison University threatened a sit-in, a hunger strike, a class boycott and a march on the president’s home to voice their demands to the university’s faculty. In the end, however, no strikes or boycotts were necessary; the faculty revised the regulations and allowed the students, among other things, freedom from wearing stockings on certain occasions.
Although it was surely a serious matter in 1941, when the university was an all girl teacher’s college, it’s a funny bit of trivia today. Six years after the May Revolt, James Madison University or JMU became a coed institution, one of the school’s many evolutions as it grew into the large, highly-ranked institution it is today.
Located in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, JMU was founded in 1908 as a woman’s college and originally consisted of six buildings. Today, the school boasts 111 major buildings on 712 acres. The university consists of seven colleges and offers 108 undergraduate, graduate, specialist and doctoral degree programs. Students have little to boycott, as JMU has the highest graduation rate – 81 percent – among southern public and private colleges, and receives consistently high rankings from major sources.
US News and World Report has rated the university highly among southern institutions for nearly two decades. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance ranked JMU 28th “top value” among public colleges; and a recent Chronicle of Higher Education survey ranked the school second in the nation for the number of students studying abroad.
Notable alumni include Butch Taylor and Leroi Moore of the Dave Matthews Band.
