University of Richmond - Richmond, VA
The private, nonsectarian University of Richmond was founded in 1830 as a Baptist seminary. In 1840, it was incorporated as Richmond College. When the Civil War erupted, the college was utilized by Confederate and then Union troops, serving as a hospital for the first and as a barracks to the latter. The college didn’t have the funding to function after the war ended, but it was reopened after a donation in 1866.
Today, the University of Richmond is a respected, high-ranking liberal arts university with over 100 majors and minors. Undergraduate schools include the School of Arts and Sciences, the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, and the Robins School of Business. The school enrolls about 2,700 undergraduate students and roughly 650 postgraduates.
The University of Richmond’s 350-acre campus is located on the west side of Richmond, near the Museum District. Apartments in the University of Richmond area can be found in Tuchahoe, Westhampton, Monument Avenue Park, Three Chopt, and Near West End. The beautiful and historic downtown Richmond is just seven miles from the university, providing museums, historic sites, restaurants, theaters, shopping, and more.
