University of Virginia - Charlottesville, VA

At the age of 76, ten years after serving as President, Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. It was 1819 and Jefferson wanted a university that offered courses of study in the science fields, something previously unheard of. He designed the impressive Rotunda but didn’t live to see it completed. Today the Rotunda is listed as a World Heritage Site along with Jefferson’s home and burial place, Monticello. The university sits on farmland owned by Jefferson’s good friend, James Monroe, who served as the school’s second rector.

With such a prestigious beginning, the University of Virginia continues to inspire. It is considered one of the top 25 universities in the nation. A public university located in Charlottesville, the University of Virginia has a long list of impressive alumni that includes President Woodrow Wilson, Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy, and Edgar Allen Poe.

Small and historic, Charlottesville is anything but dull. It is famous for indie music, wine tours, and nightlife. Nearby Shenandoah National Park, home to the stunning Skyline Drive, is perfect for hiking and camping. The Downtown Mall, one of the largest in the country, extends eight blocks. It contains art galleries, shops, restaurants, theaters, bars, and outdoor cafes.
