Sure, many cities can claim they’ve undergone urban redevelopment, but how many can claim they underwent it in the mid-1800s? Circleville, Ohio was once literally a circle — the town followed a circular Hopewell-era earthwork design over which the town was built. The original town was laid out around an octogon-shaped courthouse, so the town resembled a wagon wheel.
In the mid 1830s, the state assembly voted to straighten themselves out. They hired the Circleville Squaring Company to do the job. It is the earliest example of urban redevelopment in the nation.
Located 26 miles south of Columbus, Circleville is the birthplace Ted Lewis, a vaudeville performer famous for singing “Me and My Shadow” and the catch-phrase, “Is Everybody Happy?” Circleville’s Ted Lewis Museum displays his memorabilia.
Circleville is also famous for its annual Pumpkin Show, a major festival attracting over 400,000 visitors a year.
