Westgate Neighborhood

Columbus has a number of historic neighborhoods and Westgate is one of them. It is a beautiful community that has been able to retain its safe, family-friendly atmosphere while maintaining stable and affordable home prices. The schools in the neighborhood are good and make this a popular place to buy a home.

The borders of the Westgate neighborhood are West Broad Street to the north, South Hague Avenue on the east, Sullivant Avenue to the south and Demorest Road on the west. The zip code is 43204. This neighborhood has a neighborhood association that helps to promote and retain that residential neighborhood feel. Westgate is located four miles west of downtown Columbus. It is east of the I-270 which is easy to access.

This neighborhood dates back to the Civil War when it was the location of a prison for soldiers of the Confederacy who were captured. One of the popular historic sites in this neighborhood is the Camp Chase Cemetery where over 2000 of the men who were imprisoned here found their final rest.

Westgate became a residential neighborhood in the 1920s. There are many homes that date from the 1930s and 40s. Some are bungalow-style homes, many are more of a Cape Cod style and others are large Tudors. Some streets have sidewalks. There are few large mature trees; most of the trees are smaller and ornamental.

Westgate Park is a located in the Westgate neighborhood. This 46-acre park offers a wide variety of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Basketball, tennis and handball courts, athletic and baseball fields, a playground, a pond and walking trails are free to use. The Westgate Recreation Center located in the park has classes for children from age 3 up. Everything from ceramics to gymnastics is offered.
